Diana Gilliland Receives Prestigious Texas Award

Mrs. Gilliland   Mrs. Gilliland

The Texas Orchestra Directors Association (TODA) has recognized our own Mrs. Gilliland as this year's recipient of the Texas Orchestra Director of the Year Award.  Directors across the state of Texas are nominated each year to be considered for this prestigious recognition.  The TODA award committee scrutinizes the applications, letters of recommendation, and the impact the director has on orchestral education in the school, and the impact he/she has in the community.

Mrs. Gilliland is in her 37th year of directing school orchestras and has directed them towards the highest rating in competition.  Her orchestras perform annually for UTEP graduations, Mesita Elementary School, senior citizens homes, and are sought after by various events and organizations in El Paso.  Performing in the El Paso Symphony has been a long part of her life, for 38 years.  Many of her students have continued their craft through their college life. Over the years Mrs. Gilliland has served as a state judge for the Texas Music Educators Association.  Organizing the Vertical Strings and our own Fine Arts concerts benefits our school community, too.

Mrs. Gilliland joins four other El Paso Orchestra Directors who have received this award since TODA began in 1979.

Congratulations, Mrs. Gilliland, on being awarded this recognition by your peers across the state.

2016-17 Teacher of the Year Announced

Recently, Wiggs faculty and staff nominated teachers who have stepped above and beyond in their classroom and in the school.  When all the ballots were counted, Mrs. Cassandra Acosta was selected as our Campus Teacher of the Year.  Mrs. Acosta teaches the keyboarding class to 8th grade students.  In her curriculum, students practice skills, but, even yet, they are introduced to various career pathways and work on their 5-year graduation plan.  She also teaches students how to do page layouts, photography basics, and creative design in the Journalism class.  These students produce the yearbook.  Mrs. Acosta and her students can be seen at many events taking pictures.

Mrs. Acosta never turns down an opportunity to help a colleague or the school in any way that she can.  With a smile on her face, her friendly demeanor lets a person know she is willing to help.

We congratulate Mrs. Cassandra Acosta for being Wiggs Teacher of the Year.

Basketball Teams Start Strong in First Tournament
Our Wolverines took to the courts during the last week of January.  Wiggs hosted the 7th grade boys teams from Brown, Henderson, and Morehead, while the other teams played in different schools around the district.  When the last buzzer sounded on Saturday, our 7th grade boys team came out on top as Tournament Champions.

Congratulations to all of our teams for a great start to the season.  For the rest of the season, boys games will be on Wednesday evenings, girls games will be played on Thursday evenings, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Congratulations to Mr. Edgar Maldonado for being selected by the Wiggs Family as the 2016-17 Educational Support Personnel of the Year.  Mr. Maldonado came to our campus earlier this school year as the Assistant Head Custodian.  His motto is, "Students and teachers first" which is very evident in how quickly tasks are completed and of high quality.

Thank you, Mr. Maldonado, for your work ethic.  Congratulations, Segundo!
