WIGGS YOUNG MUSICIANS WIN FESTIVAL SWEEPSTAKES

Every year our bands, orchestra, and choir prepare for their respective annual Performance and Sight-Reading Festivals during the first week of May.  However, THIS year was an exceptional year for four of the five performing groups.  Our choir started the annual EPISD Fine Arts Festival performance string and did well, but did not receive top scores.  Congratulations to the Choir and Mrs. Slaton for their fine performance.

For the first time ever, THREE bands entered the contest to perform their rehearsed music and to play music they've never seen before (sight-reading).  Under the careful and talented direction of Mr. Orpinel and Mr. Chavarria, ALL THREE BANDS received top scores (I Division) from each judge for their fantastic performances AND received a Division 1 score for sight-reading.  SWEEPSTAKES CUBED!

Not to be outdone, our talented, young, string musicians rehearsed and rehearsed for their their time in the spotlight.  When the "dust had settled" and our exceptional director Mrs. Gilliland had lowered her arms at the end of the last piece, the orchestra, too, received top scores for their exceptional performance.  But the focus of these musicians did not end there.  After sight-reading their piece of music, the judge awarded them a Division 1 score.
SWEEPSTAKES!

Congratulations to our talented directors and to our young musicians for their dedication to their instruments and excellence.

Digital Citizenship, Common Sense, and New Page

Has your child informed you what they are learning in PE, Tech Apps, Keyboarding, or any other class?  Digital Citizenship is part of the curriculum in those classes as part of preparing your child to effectively use the internet, social media, and more as part of their education.  Copyright, internet safety, and cyber bullying are just a few topics being learned throughout this month.

A new page has been included under the "For Parents" tab to assist you in monitoring and reinforcing what your child is learning at Wiggs.  Click on "For Parents" to access "Digital Citizenship".  There are a lot of cool tips for parents.

Visitors to EPISD campuses must now show ID to enter

The new safety program uses scanners developed by Raptor Technologies to determine whether a specific visitor to a school is a registered sex offender. If cleared, the program will print a badge that contains the visitor’s name, photograph and destination, as well as the date of the visit.

EPISD will accept the following official forms of identification to use on the scanner:
•Driver’s licenses
•State-issued identification cards
•Military identification cards
•Consulate-issued passports

“This is an improvement over the systems most of our schools have used for several years,” said El Paso ISD Police Chief Victor Araiza. “It will help us weed out undesirable subjects from our schools and provide our parents and partners with a better visitors badge to use as they do business with our campuses.”

Until now, visitors to most schools in EPISD were routed into the front office where personnel would ask them to sign in and they were given a generic visitors badge before they were allowed to enter the school.

EPISD schools will adhere to the new scanning-system of checking in visitors, so parents and other community members who do business with the District should expect to be asked for their official identification card.

Also, parents who have arranged for relatives to pick up their children from school outside of regular dismissal hours should inform them that a valid ID will be required to sign-out the student. The ID card will be scanned using the Raptor Technologies software.

The District on Monday will begin a pilot period under the new visitor management system. While parents and visitors will still be asked to provide an ID card, no one will be turned away if they do not have proper identification.

“In the event that a person does not have identification, said person can still be given access to the building,” Araiza said. “An administrator or designee will ask a series of questions related to their visit and determine whether access should be granted, as well as whether an escort is needed.”

SPECIAL ATTENDANCE PRESENTATION ON OCTOBER 29
Regular school attendance is essential for a student to make the most of his or her education, to benefit from teacher-led and school activities, to build each day's learning on the previous days, and to grow as an individual. Absences from class may result in serious disruption of a student's mastery of the instructional materials; therefore, the student and parent should make every effort to avoid unnecessary absences. You are cordially invited to attend a presentation on Student Retention and Truancy Prevention by Ms. Vanessa Escareno from the Alpha Initiave.  The presentation will be held on October 29 at 12:30 pm in the Wiggs Cafeteria.  Come and learn more about the new attendance rules and how they impact you and your student.
